TRAMA THE QUIET GIRL The Quiet Girl, il film diretto da Colm Bairéad, è ambientato nell'Irlanda rurale del 1981 e racconta la storia di Cáit (Catherine Clinch), una tranquilla bambina di nove anni, che proviene da una famiglia problematica, povera, con molti figli e in attesa di un altro bambino. PANORAMICA SU THE QUIET GIRL Ambientato nell’Irlanda rurale dei primi anni ’80, The Quiet Girl è un film commovente, poetico, quasi lirico. Colm Bairéad, al suo esordio alla regia cinematografica di un lungometraggio, ha deciso di portare al cinema il racconto della scrittrice Claire Keegan ("Foster”) dopo aver sentito una forte connessione con la storia. Candidato agli Oscar 2023 come miglior film internazionale, affronta il tema della famiglia disfunzionale e più in generale del maltrattamento dei bambini. Il regista era interessato soprattutto a capire come fosse cambiata la genitorialità in Irlanda. “Nel 1981 eravamo alle soglie di un'Irlanda moderna, ma ancora molto cattolica e socialmente conservatrice. I bambini sono stati visti e non ascoltati. I miei genitori erano più liberali” - ha raccontato. Per Bairéad non è stato facile trovare l’attrice giusta per la parte della protagonista, perché serviva qualcuno di talento e che avesse il giusto accento irlandese. Così per velocizzare i tempi ha chiesto alle scuole locali di inviare materiale e tra i numerosi filmati, quello di Catherine Clinch, per il ruolo di Cáit, lo ha fortemente colpito. “C’era una sorta di interiorità nella sua performance - ha spiegato il regista - che era perfetta per il personaggio. È stato una specie di miracolo”. Sulla scelta di Carrie Crowley (Eibhlín), invece, non ci sono state esitazioni; Andrew Bennett, per Bairéad, aveva la giusta morbidezza che si addiceva al carattere di Seán.
